This project apparently just started and is associated with BOINC and Climate Predictor. Look at their link above and I think you'll find a wonderful, simplistic, and very well marketed 'how to' install and why guide for dummies. They picked up 3k hosts in the past 24 hours(from just 15k) according to boincstats.com

Incorporating some of their features in all of the BOINC home pages would help add new users. It's a highly inviting approach they are using on their page.

There's even a short streaming movie people can view explaining the basics. I'm not sure how viable this option is in regard to bandwith but I'd like to see it looked into....

Would appreciate some feedback from the project developers.

One problem with the BBC version. It is hard coded to run only that project. To run additional project you must go to another site and download the standard BOINC client. It will also only allow the single user type install if I remember correctly, which to me is the worst install mode.

OK, but my point was not their particular version of DC but their approach to marketing it to the public that seems to be novel and worthy of learning from.....

well its definatly an intresting project

if you already have Boinc you can attach to it just like any other Boinc project

as far as being able to complete a job there... um WOW it will in my estimation take the 1 computer i have running it about 2700HRS to complete the jobs there

alot of people will probaly drop out of the project and alot of people hopefully will be exposed to distributed computing and will serch out other projects and will contuinue to crunch

any suggestions about how we should try to improve the home page along these lines?

Dr. David Baker,

Basically, I believe it would be beneficial to Rosetta to adopt the approach that the BBC has undertaken. Think about the 'customer'. Just make an introductory home page that is 'idiot friendly'. Face it, most users hear of a project like this and think...'ok...I'll go to the website'. If it is too complicated they then think 'why bother'.

Make the homepage simpler with 1,2,3 instructions like the BBC site did and watch your hosts grow through the roof.

It's easy at this point . Once you realize how great the potential is for so many computer users out there...

Hear ,Hear Mike Mitchell as it is nice someone else expressed my feelings so eloquently...to ...."Make the homepage simpler with 1,2,3 instructions like the BBC site did and watch your hosts grow through the roof." Ahhhh hello folks TV advertising goes MOST of the way...Can you imagine the usership if this was brodcasted outside of the UK ? To BBC America especially ...but of course ALL its overseas affiliates.....
