Having read the Technical news Here I got to wondering why the various project organisations within BOINC do not have a method of alerting each other to possible problems that could affect each of them.....any ideas why not?

Actually, we do exchance info w/ other projects (namely: setiathome and Einstien@home), although not in a formal manner. I had contacted both projects about our problems but, in hindsight, I doubt I phrased the symptoms so that they were familiar to them. (I am just learning how BOINC goes about doing what it does, so my meandering investigations likely seemed confusing to everyone!) Nonetheless both projects responded to my queries quickly.

In that case why not set up a formal method of info exchange between the Tech Depts of all the projects, even if it is only a regular 'round robin' e-mail with the 'ramblings' of various technical experts of the problems noted/solved on their various home projects?

While I can't speak for the admins of the other projedcts, I'm swamped w/ other Baker group computing issues. While this BOINC project is becoming more and more important to our group's sceintific efforts, the R@H system is still only a small percentage of the computing resources that require my attention within our lab on any given day. The BOINC system doesn't come on my radar but once a week or so...

there are only so many hours in a day.

You are correct, however, that is how it should be done. I guess I'm just lazy.....

You should subscribe to the project email list, possibly the developer list also. http://boinc.ssl.berkeley.edu/email_lists.php If you are not already. There is normally an email on that list when a serious update to the server software is released.

as john implied, the berkeley email lists are sort of how infomation is exchanged at present, it's generally quite good and things happen quickly

a problem with the scheduler sending the same result to multiple hosts was identified at einstein, and within a few days it was resolved and a new scheduler implemented and the code added to the CVS
