I am comfused. What is credit and what does it to? It ain't money I am...almost sure of. The only explanation is it is time spent on a computer for ...idk... brag rights or competition.

(yes i am new, A friend got me into this)

you've pretty much got it right. it doesn't really do anything except tell you how much work you've crunched. yes, it's good for those who want to compete against each other (or brag).

This is a why BOINC should conside changing the word from "credits" to "points", to avoid confusion (as the BBC/CPDN usability study has shown a couple of months ago).

Welcome Jason!

There are teams of users, and they are ranked by how many "points" they've tallied for the project.

Out of curiousity... what did your friend tell you that got you interested in R@H??

The 5.4.x versions will use 'work done' instead of 'credits'.

My friend joined SITI @ Home but i couldn't get that to work right away so i joined this. I use to use another program that did the same thing execpt they said things about getting money or prizes and then later took them away. At that time I didn't care and was still using the program but a system failure caused me to lose everything and I forgot the site. I always like helping anyway I can to sience.

Sounds like you're in the right place then! Be sure to check out Dr. Baker's science udpates in his journal. And review some of the articles about what they're up to.

In my mind, nailing down this protein folding stuff is crucial! Hearing a beacon in the static from some planet billions of miles away, across the other side of the galaxy is interesting... but how will it help mankind in MY lifetime?

Crunch more Rosetta!

Crunch more Rosetta!

Many times a person sets out to do one thing, but discovers something different.

Dr. Anderson from Seti and more recently Boinc saw that after seti classic was created, the response from us users was more than he could have hoped for. After just 2-3 years they had enough users to crunch all the data that they could collect from arecibo. They sent out additional copies of work units to keep users fed with work and happy, but was a waste of resources. He then decided to do something interesting, but completely different from seti. He created BOINC so other young cash strapped projects could benefit from all these excess CPU cycles. So now Rosetta, and more than 20 other projects can access what would have otherwise been wasted cpu cycles.

This is one way Seti is helping mankind in "your lifetime".

WoW! Reading about what Rosetta does (more indepth then at first) I am really glad i am here to help. At least I can say to my kids someday (when ever I have them lol) that their father helped "crack the code to protein".
