They switched to SSL. Set Rosetta to no new tasks, finish up the ones you have in your queue, then remove the project. Add it again, but when adding, at the start use https instead of http.

Unfortunately it screws the caching.

Due to having multiple machines I run squid to save downloading the same thing multiple times. It would have helped if they left the downloads as plain http so one could cache them at least.

All it does is confirm there is no man in the middle. Useful for financial stuff, passwords and so on, not so for downloads of data files. Now my machines on the project download each time and tie up their download server connection for longer. They could have just done the scheduler and that would have been enough.

i think the http (non-s) is after all still available? i'd guess one could use that as a fallback?
that would keep the proxies sane

but i'd think 1.20 is an adequate improvement, a large common database file now goes into the project directory. this significantly reduce the downloads and disk footprint

Using a secure connection for scientific data to me seems a good idea. Sure, the whole BOINC system isn't at the levels of a financial system but still it helps

I asked about why the change was needed in the SSL thread, and the response was that the http version will continue to be active for the foreseeable future. They added https because some large organizations offered to donate CPU time, but for whatever reason they would only do so over https instead of http. So the Rosetta people added https for them.

You can continue using http without issue but for simplicity sake they would like everyone, at their convenience, to switch to the SSL version. Eventually the built in project joiner of Boinc will also be updated so new signups/new setups will default to the SSL version. So over time this "problem" will slowly, naturally, sort itself out and everyone will migrate to SSL seamlessly. There appears to be no rush to switch, the normal http version isn't going away anytime soon. For the average user, there is no difference using the http version vs the https, it's just easier to support one thing over the long term, and that one thing might as well be the more secure standard going forward.

I need to use my exisiting account to administrate the Team I created!

See the reasons for going to HTTPS.
Basically it had to be all or nothing, and nothing wasn't an option any longer.

This is good. I run boinc on 4 computers and the software, the boinc package I have installed, seems to like the http site. No option, easily available, to go https.

My web browser has the username/password information stored away for seamless logins to this site. Even not knowing what OS/Browser you're using, there's a possibility yours does too.

I upgraded as requested and it is running OK. Unfortunately, the new version added a full screen screen-saver which blocks my view of the display of stock market action. I have to wiggle the rodent every few minutes to get rid of thiks full screen advertisement. I tried renaming c:windolwsboinc.scr to c:windowsboincA.scr and so far the advertisement hasn't popped up again, but I'm not sure if the software will be continuously searching for a nonexistent file. I will remove rosetta@home if I don't get an answer to this!

What new version?
All it is, is a change in web address.

And what advertisement?
Rosetta doesn't have any advertising.

It does have graphics you can watch if you want to- but you have to select them, or you can set it up to act as a screen saver, which you can just turn off.

Really? Threats? on your first post? Nice to meet you too!

Don't select BOINC as your Windows screensaver, and it won't be displayed as your Windows screensaver. If you select NONE as your screensaver, you won't have a screensaver that hides your applications until mouse of keyboard activity is detected.

If you has other questions, please ask... if you ask nicely, people feel better about helping you understand how to get things running the way you like.
