i believe cures will be found for every major disease the only question is when...i run rosetta@home in hopes of making those days sooner

1. A person very close to me suffers from a disease current medicine doesn't know anything about and cannot cure. I have the hope that in the future, a cure is finally found.
2. It's the only way I can help; I don't have money, time or knowledge to offer.
3. I can make a difference.

Ten reasons why I crunch rosetta:

10. I'm a computer technologist, and how to apply and optimize computing power
to solve natural and mathematical conundrums is an attractive pursuit.

9. I like contributing to the good of mankind: hunting for little green men,
finding billion digit primes and solving chess puzzles fall into the realm of
entertainment, I'm afraid. Rosetta is a vital science.

8. Dr. Baker and the other project scientists interact directly with the
community.

7. I can actually get the workunits done between computer crashes, maintenance,
and normal usage. Some projects (like Climate Prediction) are almost
infeasable for normal desktop PCs.

6. I can understand what a good result means, and also the process by which it's found.

5. I can play the FoldIt! game, and not only increase my appreciation of the
difficulty of the problem, but also contribute directly to the science.

4. We are making incremental measurable progress toward achieving the goal: a
program which can solve the 3-dimensional structure of a protein given it's
amino composition. I don't think we're going to ever predict the weather,
solve chess or find little green men (they might find us, though).

3. The competition isn't just how many credits we can get - it's how useful
the work we perform is.

2. We're on a scientific frontier - not just finding another one bigger than
the last one. Nobody at all knows how to predict even a single protein
shape.

Don't have a top list, but it's relevant to my course in Protein Chemistry.
It's also useful for my hexacore PC, seeing as 4 of them are mostly idle.

10. I have a quad core processor, so running Rosetta even at 75% of my computer's power, I can still watch movies and surf the web without any hiccups at all.

9. It runs on Mac and Linux OS's too, so all of my computers can contribute their CPU time.

8. Even with a limited knowledge of microbiology it's really cool to read about what kinds of proteins Rosetta is folding and what they're being folded for.

7. My grandpa has Alzheimer's and my father is at risk of developing it later in life

6. People I care about greatly have battled with cancer--the idea that running this in my computer's spare time could lead to a cure is amazing.

When I visited Haiti we learned there was a cholera outbreak, and before we could even go we had to start on a nasty drug called chloroquine--if Rosetta could find a way to combat either of these diseases, it would be a major breakthrough in helping the Haitian country and other countries fighting these diseases.

4. Watching this project work in tandem with Fold.It is absolutely amazing. I love the idea of a *game* being used to do research, and then that output being synergized with Rosetta's massive computational ability.

3. I'm no researcher, and I'm no scientist, but if this is how I or anyone else could help, I don't see any reason not to.

2. I'm majoring in Electrical Engineering with a minor in Computer Engineering--understanding how Rosetta is using an algorithm to find the lowest energy of a protein on a distributed computing network is absolutely riveting for me.

first off, i don't care about credits, compared to most of you mine are pretty dismal. all i really care about is doing something to benefit someone else. i started out doing seti back in the late 90's or early 00's, cant remember really. i've considered dumping that project and going all rosetta. something keeps steering me over there though. i probably should go 80/20 (rosetta/seti).

i tried it a couple of years ago and stopped because of that problem, and now I tried a few weeks again, and the result is still the same; Rosetta uses all 4 cores all spare time leaving no computing time for the other projects.

Thats why I now disable Rosetta again.

Technically, that's due to BOINC rather than Rosetta. The Rosetta deadlines are relatively short in comparison to many of the other projects, but BOINC will just request less work from the project if it has debt to other projects so it might take a week or two, but BOINC will work out when to get Rosetta tasks and when not to. They can all play nicely together.

I've very recently just joined the gig, and I have to say its great that programmes like this are available.
I shared the programme with all my friends
and well they agree.

1. This project is almost like a BOINC version of FoldIt@home, which requires a separate client.

2. This project has an amazing screensaver!

3. Unlike some projects from WCG, this project works on finding a cause and cure, instead of just looking for a cause.

5. You can choose estimated runtime for the tasks!
