I've got the beta version of BOINC V5.3.31 running on my system, but I can't get any Rosetta work. When I try to update the Rosetta project, I get a "Message from server: platform 'i686-apple-darwin' not found" message. Any suggestions? I'm getting Seti work units fine. For those curious about why I'm not using BOINC 5.3.13 because it doesn't run very well on the new Intel Macs. |

For those curious about why I'm not using BOINC 5.3.13 because it doesn't run very well on the new Intel Macs. AFAIK there's no Rosetta client for Intel-Macs available yet. I'm also impatiently waiting. Einstein and Seti are ATM the only projects that support Intel-Macs. Seti works pretty fine but Einstein takes WAY to much time per WU (about 7 hrs on my Mac Mini , 1:20 hrs under Windows on the same machine). So we just have to sit and wait for a Rosetta-Client... |

For the project staff Please see these instructions for a discussion of the support for the mac+intel platform. Please note that this does not require compiling a new binary version; you can use the existing mac+ppc binary which will run in emulation mode.
Of course compiling a native intel binary would be beneficial for performance, but doing this would at least get people up and running in the meantime... I hope this is helpful! |

For the project staff It's been mentioned over in rosetta a few times now and I also assume they know about it since on eof the Boinc developers is working with them ;-) Team mauisun.org |

Where would I find this project.xml file? I've done a search and can't find it on my computer. |

Where would I find this project.xml file? I've done a search and can't find it on my computer. These instructions are for the project staff to configure their server properly. As a user you don't have to change anything except for waiting for an Intel-Mac version of Rosetta. Once it's available the Boinc client will download it automaticaly. |

After upgrading to Boinc 5.4.9 on a MacBook Pro (Intel i.e.), I can't get any work from the server , and get the message "platform 'i686-apple-darwin' not found"... Is this temporary (my Windows machine gets work)? |

After upgrading to Boinc 5.4.9 on a MacBook Pro (Intel i.e.), I can't get any work from the server , and get the message "platform 'i686-apple-darwin' not found"... Is this temporary (my Windows machine gets work)? Rosetta does not support the Mac intel i686 processor at this time. There is work being done to compile a version for this platform, but it will not be available for some time. Moderator9 ROSETTA@home FAQ Moderator Contact |

I thought BOINC was open source. Am I able to compile the client myslef? |

I thought BOINC was open source. The Boinc core client is open source, there already is an universal binary. The Rosetta application is closed source, so we have to wait until an universal binary is released. In the meantime you can crunch Seti or Einstein they are Mac-Intel ready. |

We ordered an intel mac and are expecting to get it soon. Once we have it, we will start supporting intel macs. |

Is it possible to enable some optimizations (SSEx, if helpful)? All Intel Macs are capable to do SSE2 (or even SSE3?). Should boost the whole thing... Will this client app be first released on RALPH? |

Just got the mac today. We'll see what optimizations are possible soon. Yes, it will be released on ralph first. |

From David, it appears that there may be only one way at the present to get Rosetta working on an Intel Mac Mini, but it may not be worth the effort and money. That method would be to obtain from Apple Computer the Boot Camp Public Beta Software, partition the hard drive with a second partition, then use the Boot Camp Software to install Windows XP on the second partition. Then BOINC software and Rosetta could be installed to run under the Windows XP operating system. |

From David, it appears that there may be only one way at the present to get Rosetta working on an Intel Mac Mini... Have patience. Don't bother with Boot Camp (and installation, licensing, etc..) there is a mac-i686 version already compiled and being tested over on Ralph@Home. Once the bugs are squashed it will be automatically be available to Intel Mac Rosetta@Home users. So join, sit back, and wait for the magic to happen on its own. :) |

Wow! THAT was fast! See Project Important annoucement thread. "INTEL MAC application available for testing in RALPH!" Add this signature to your EMail: Running Microsoft's "System Idle Process" will never help cure cancer, AIDS nor Alzheimer's. But running Rosetta@home just might! https://boinc.bakerlab.org/rosetta/ |

A version of Rosetta for the INTEL Mac is available for testing on the RALPH Project. If you have an INTEL Mac, and are willing to help in the development and testing of the Mac INTEL version of Rosetta, please attach to Ralph and run the new application. Actually, Boinc just downloaded version Rosetta 5.22 to my iMac Core Duo for Rosetta. The worker is rosetta_5.22_i686-apple-darwin. There were also a ton of other files downloaded. |
