Is is worth continuing running Rosetta for those of us who can not complete a WU? I mean does any useful information get passed back after a crash or a halt at the 83.33% point. Or are wasting CPU cycles? Should we wait for the new version or keep going computing? |

Is is worth continuing running Rosetta for those of us who can not complete a WU? I mean does any useful information get passed back after a crash or a halt at the 83.33% point. Or are wasting CPU cycles? Should we wait for the new version or keep going computing? The WU should not halt at 83%, it may appear so, but what it is most likely doing is starting full-atom high res predictions which take more time and memory. If you do not have enough memory (we recommend 512MB, but this may not be enough if you are running a lot of apps), it may take very long because it will use virtual memory and read/write to disk. The current issue/bug is that if you are doing more than one project and you switch at an interval that is less than the time required to do the high-res prediction, which can take over an hour, the WU will error out when the BOINC client tries to switch apps due to the app being haulted and removed from memory. So in your preferences, I recommend changing the Switch between applications every X minutesto 2 or even 3 hours. And set Leave applications in memory while preempted?to YES. Also, if you are on a HT machine, you may want to set On multiprocessors, use at mostto 1. Some people have reported that this helps. You may also want to try the 5+ client since some people have reported these issues are not seen with the new client. We are currently working on trying to resolve this and other issues. |

Switch between applications every X minutes This doesnt do what it really indicates it might. I have mine to switch every 2 hours, and I find its RARE that an application will stay in place for 2 hours. Seems it will switch out for lots of reasons, especially on multiple CPU computers (like ANY work unit finishes). A better recommendation, (until its fixed) might be to have Rosetta be the ONLY project being processed. |

Switch between applications every X minutes to 2 or even 3 hours. And set OK, it's a work around, not more, not less Leave applications in memory while preempted? to YES. I recommend: NO BOINC is intended to use your spare cycles, not your spare memory. Not every PC has 1GB of RAM, not every PC is purely running Rosetta, not every PC runs 24x7. Also, if you are on a HT machine, you may want to set On multiprocessors, use at most to 1. Some people have reported that this helps. Good suggestion! I have a DP system and should only use 1 CPU? WTF? Every other project uses all CPUs available. Some people have reported? When? Where? Confirmed? You may also want to try the 5+ client since some people have reported these issues are not seen with the new client. Reported? When? Where? Confirmed? 5.x isn't even stable!! [qoute]We are currently working on trying to resolve this and other issues.
That's the only comment I loved to read! "We're working on it" GOOD THING!. But why is your project no longer Beta? Because it's stable? Nope, it has some serious showstoppers. Read your forum! Because you received some interesting results (as stated on the home page)? Well maybe, but that's no criteria for going public. I delivered results for a few days, but now I have to stop it until it works like every other BOINC project. For me that means, working task switch, reasonable "break points", no work arounds to get the project going. Sorry for sounding rude, but that's my opinion. Your project is interesting, but please get it ready for prime time and I'll take part again... scsimodo |

A new version of Boinc is about to be released today. This new version will work with RAH. This new version will fix a lot of problems you have today. You will need to uninstall your present version to install the new one. Everyone will need to do this. Ron, I am running Boinc 5.2.1 You will get 5.2.2 or 5.2.3 later on today. The good day is here. Just keep an eye on it. It will fix a lot of things. (@David: I hope you see the changes before you try to find fixes for your problems where there are none ;)) |

I'm running CC4.72 (which seems to be operating just fine - since I learned to leave it alone [grin]) What will 5.2.x give me, aside from not being able to connect to LHC? |

The link below also contains notes on "Version Details" that I think address your question. Regards, Bob P. |

[What will 5.2.x give me, aside from not being able to connect to LHC? Whiter laundry? :) Nothing much. I would wait a bit after it comes out to upgrade. If you have two or more installations, wait a bit, then do one ... if it goes well, do the rest. The LHC@Home guys are testing the 5.x changes required on the server side in the alpha program. So, it should be coming soon. The actual change to allow the server to accept 5.x clients I believe is a very small change. Attaching to the project is a bigger change on the server side, but also localized some. Anyway, 5.x is not out yet, so it is still who cares ... The only reason I am interested is that I know that there are a few minor bug fixes that will improve operation, but not likely enough to be noticable. Oh, and the Wiki now has a version description page and we are accumulating notes. It would go faster if I was able to work more, not wasting my time sleeping much, so that is a plus ... :) |

Paul, are you saying that they are working of making 5.* available for LHC? "I'm trying to maintain a shred of dignity in this world." - Me |

Fuzzy ... Yes, but, they are doing it through the Alpha part of their project first. Since there is no work, it really does not matter... since the 5.2.x has not been made "Recommended", it also does not matter ... :) Now for really important questions ... why can't I get my standings to rise ... I need more computers ... |
