You can uninstall and reinstall the BOINC Manager and it will leave your projects and work units in place... but the directory path you mention is specific to Rosetta@home... so I doubt it will resolve the problem. I would suggest you uninstall BOINC, then delete the BOINC Data directory at the path shown (this will remove all of your attached projects and work units, if you have projects other then Rosetta), then reinstall BOINC and attach to Rosetta@home again, and that should give you a clean slate. Colour me surprised! As a last-ditch attempt at a fix before re-installing, I tried deleting the file that was giving me a problem, as well as a second that then gave the same error. BOINC started up perfectly and I'm working again :) I can even see the Rosetta graphics and everything! Thank you for the help ^_^ |

Hello Forum, I have a general question. There are times that I defrag my hard drive and also run a program called Advanced System Care by IObit Information technology. This program removes junk files, scans for malware, fixes registry errors, and defrags my hard drive. I have been using this program for a few years now and it brings up the question. By running this program does it in anyway interfere rosetta@home or any other @home projects ??. |

Hello Forum, No. Think of it this way. You use your PC all the time while Rosetta runs. And it doesn't interfere with anything! I too run some apps when I'm away (perfectdisk) and haven't had a problem at all. |

Q: "To completion" time is going UP! I am new to Rosetta. Got my first WU today. Time to complete is going up, as noted in the quoted item above. I was already to abort it then decided to come here and read first. I have been working this WU for about an hour. I think the "to complete" was around 5 hours when it started. It seems to have added almost the whole working time to the "to complete time" which is now over 6 hours and is steadily going up. Meanwhile my Seti work units run as you would expect with the "to complete" going down. In most cases the "to complete" on the seti units go down faster than the elapsed time. Just let me know that this is normal for Rosetta and I will relax. It just seems very very odd. Rosetta Mini 3.14 Intel dual core Windows 7 Running 24X7 Full time internet access No screen saver Monitor is off most of the time. |

I think it is more interesting to know how long the task(s) have been running. Default a task will run for about 3 hours. If a task is stuck the watchdog will/should abort after an additional 4 hours. If a task is stuck (percentage complete does not increase), stopping and restarting BOINC will sometimes help.I have (had) WUs coming in with a "time to completion" at download anywhere from 2h to 10h, possibly depending on the machine they are running. And then at some point about a couple of month ago, more or less randomly some WU's would run fine as usual until anywhere from 1% to 60% completed, they would just "sit" and the only thing moving was the "time to completion" counter. Had terminated than jobs after +20h for what normally would have been a 4-5h job... Disabled R@H on three hosts, attached to RALPH@Home on one machine instead (with the WUs that come in few and far between usually running without a hitch for 1.5-2h)... Ralf |

Q: "To completion" time is going UP! OK, this WU has gotten 12:40 Elapsed cpu time since it started. The Remaining was around 5 hours when it started. It is now 33+ hours and still going up. And we are only showing 6.706% done which is where it was at 4 hours Elapsed. I am going to assume this is a bad work unit OR that Rosetta does not work properly on my system. I will abort the WU. If the next one does this, I am outa here. Edit: When I aborted the WU and sent an update request I got a new Rosetta WU. The remaining on this one says 4:17. So I will expect I can complete this one in 8 hours or less. |

NOT a newbie, but all of the references I can find to merging CPU records are rather old, and although there is reference to turning this feature back on some years ago, it does not seem to have happened. For no reason I can determine, 1 of my 4 hosts keeps ending up reporting 0 points on BOINCstats under 'Host list'. I let it run its work out, renamed it, restarted it with only 3 projects, Rosetta being one of them. Ran fine for maybe a month, then starts showing 0 points again. Somehow this CPU is split yet again, and Rosetta is the only one of the 3 that won't let me merge the two of them together. It was running Rosetta previously, but there were more projects and I couldn't seem to figure out which one was causing the issue. Is there a way to do this? |

Now seems to be turned on, we'll see if this stays fixed or not. I was able to merge the two CPUs in question. Thanks! I can see several Work Units on my result page that were sent on January 13 and have a deadline of January 23, their Server State is 'In Progress' and Client State is 'new'. I, unfortunately don't see any such tasks in my BOINC Manager, is there a way to re-request them ? |

Newbie or Not Newbie, that is the question... I have been crunching numbers for several years. I have had nothing but problems with my upgrade to El Capitan and have lost all my logins and passwords. I have a log book for websites but have received messages that the logins and pw listed cannot be found. I am very puzzled by this message, but was wondering if any one person can help me rebuild what I have done in the past? If not so be it, but it would be nice. I think I have three accounts from different times. I have a general idea of what is going on, but not really. If there is ever a seminar about it I'd love to know about it so I might attend. I think it is a good use of my processors time. |

If your WU runtime preference is low (<4hrs) you will frequently see the progress % jump from 1.xx to 100%, or into the 50% range. Basically, each different protein takes a different time to crunch a model. Some proteins will crunch for several hours to complete a single model. Others will crunch a model every 5 or 10 minutes. Is there a simple way to prepare BOINC for a computer shutdown on a desktop? I guess I can schedule it to stop all computations by a certain time. If I shut down while it's working will my progress be lost? (running Windows 10) |

If I shut down while it's working will my progress be lost? Ideally, BOINC would be shutdown by right clicking the icon and selecting "exit", prior to shutting down Windows. But it is not required. Some amount of work is lost. It is anything that has been done since the last checkpoint the task was able to store. You can get a sense for how much that is by looking at the properties for specific tasks, and comparing the "CPU time at last checkpoint" with the "CPU time". Rosetta tasks take a checkpoint after each model completed, and some types of tasks take checkpoints within models as well. So, typically, you should only be losing about 10 minutes of work per active task. Rosetta Moderator: Mod.Sense |
