Somehow today, connectivity to the Rosetta servers is very bad. I even can't normaly visit the Message Boards. I am not the only as more people from the Dutch Power Cows have had this today. Could someone look into it? Member of the Dutch Power Cows Trying to get the world on IPv6, do you have it? check here: IPv6.RHarmsen.nl |

They turned their servers down for awhile and now the Rosetta version is 5.22 up from 5.16. They must have been upgrading to the new version 5.22 because my pc downloaded that version now and it is listed on their website. It is all back up and working now. |

I think it must be due to the spike of 60k users trying to download ~10MB each (new Rosetta executable etc) within a relatively short period of a few hours. Handling 1000s-10,000s of concurrently open HTTP connections is non-trivial and requires some work on Apache sw (and sometimes Linux) config. The change from 5.16 to 5.22 is also a factor as everybody needs to download a new executable. but if Rosetta can't cope with the fact that this many clients try to download, then something needs to be done to prevent this in the future. (thats my opinion) next to this al, it is good that last week I put up a Proxy between my Boinc clients (software) so I only need to download it once, insted of five times. The change from 5.16 to 5.22 is also a factor as everybody needs to download a new executable. The servers were slowed by the preparations for deployment of version 5.22. In addition they had to modify some of the server software to deploy the new Intel Mac version. For a while the server may respond sluggishly as the new software is distributed to all the systems. This usually clears up in a day or so. Moderator9 ROSETTA@home FAQ Moderator Contact |

According to BOINCstats, 88% of the hosts are Windows based, so it wouldn't help MUCH... but I was wondering why not phase in a new release? I mean release it for Linux, then 6 hours later release it for MAC, then a few hours later, release it for Windows... or any order you want, but adjust the time delay based on number of active hosts out there and average time between connections to server. .. Or limit us to say 1000 updates at once.. and everyone beyond that point gets told they're current. Although, the 8hr to 24hr WU times will definately help reduce the load on the server so that it's averaged out during the day a lot better instead of (almost) all at once as soon as the server is brought back up. |

...help reduce the load on the server so that it's averaged out during the day... This is one great advantage of having a multi-day WU cache. I've never understood why some people seem so defiantly opposed to them. Just imagine if each of us were hitting the server every 3 days rather than every 8 hours. The increased server load would be 1/10th of what it is now. Add this signature to your EMail: Running Microsoft's "System Idle Process" will never help cure cancer, AIDS nor Alzheimer's. According to BOINCstats, 88% of the hosts are Windows based, so it wouldn't help MUCH... but I was wondering why not phase in a new release? Because the goal is to get the improved application out as fast as possible. The servers can handle the load. The delay is only a matter of a few mins for any particular system. While the effects seem large in the forum response, it is not that big a deal for the automated parts of BOINC. Very few people monitor their systems so closely that they even notice any latency at all. Moderator9 ROSETTA@home FAQ Moderator Contact |

...it is good that last week I put up a Proxy between my Boinc clients (software) so I only need to download it once, insted of five times. Actualy I haven't got many info on it, I use Winroute for connectivity, wich has a build in Proxy. You could use any proxy you want, like Squid. And I configured my Boinc client's to use the proxy. and ready you are. PS. just give the Proxy eough room to store files, I setup a space for 512MB, but about 90MB is used.
