Einstein had a unique hairdo, as well. And he made valuable contributions to science - like the fact that it's dangerous to work around lovely ladies when your wife is living elsewhere. And he went on to describe the effect in great detail - although it may boil down to "heavenly bodies approaching light have great attractive powers." Of course, Stephen Hawkings can probably explain Einstein's theories in terms that laypeople can understand a wee bit better than I can. :) Being unique has its advantages. I was in Dunedin, New Zealand for a few weeks, and people were walking up to me and telling me where they'd seen me in the last few days - even the cook in a restaurant. Table-side service! :) |

WE have none . (Well I may be a little envious being bald :) ) I am old to remember , slide rulers, computers without keyboards (yes flashing lights gave the results), huge boxes of punched data cards, paper tape, the first PCs (My nephews say I am old enough to remember the first abacus but, I digress). I belong to a generation that was promised a brave new and better future brought by science. I am glad to see some of those promises being fulfilled'. And I am very glad that brave new future is lead by people like David Baker. Yes, he and the members of his team past and present have look at the issue of protein modeling and prediction in ways that are not conventional . And he and his team have brought in a lot of "non-scientists" to be part of a team in ways not conventional and his work and that of others are bring hope to many. I am honored to be a small cog in that army of people from 160+ nations crunching for Rosetta. So, I started this thread to celebrate Davids genius with some humor: a non-conventional way to honor a most non-conventional hero/genius/ person. |

Don't forget Beethoven, he has been quite a hairy guy too! So you should all consider to let your hair grow in order to improve your geniousity (or however that's called in English) :-) |

Funny you should mention Beethoven just now. Add this signature to your EMail: Running Microsoft's "System Idle Process" will never help cure cancer, AIDS nor Alzheimer's. But running Rosetta@home just might! https://boinc.bakerlab.org/rosetta/ |

Heck - compared to when I was in school he is downright respectable looking. Where have all the long haired hippy freaks (like me in a past life) gone? I guess most of us grew up, joined the work force, and became respectable (?) citizens (fotunately, my hair has stayed ;-). So much for youthful optimism to change the world ;-) Yes, I too remember using slippy dip sticks (slide rules), punch card decks, and acoustic coupled modems running at 150 baud! Glad to see them go or evelove as well, even if we as a species haven't (evolved much that is). !!Stupidity should be PAINFUL!! |

I lived in Bonn for more than 30 years and have visited the house where he has been born. There's a funny Beethoven monument there too, it was supposed to face the officials when it has been first shown to the public - but it faced the people with his back to the blue blooded :-) Keyboards : Part of my hair had to go when I got a motorbike, it was impossible to comb it after a while and it didn't fit under the cloths. Currently it's slightly longer than on the avatar picture - and slightly more greyish |
