Just so I can get comfortable with the concept, would someone in as layman terms as possible, explain the relationship between "cpu time" in Boinc Manager and "real" time? If I look at my watch for one minute, how much "cpu time" should I expect to have elasped? Assume no other programs running, single cpu devoted 95%-100% to BOINC Rosetta. Is the relationship between the two "times" fixed, or relative? |

You crunch during one hour. That is one hour of real time. If your CPU is used at 90%, your CPU calculation time will be 54 minutes. |

Makes sense, and is in line with what I expected. Thanx! You crunch during one hour. That is one hour of real time. If your CPU is used at 90%, your CPU calculation time will be 54 minutes. |

Ya I would expect it just depends upon % of time for what ELSE your PC is doing. Add this signature to your EMail: Running Microsoft's "System Idle Process" will never help cure cancer, AIDS nor Alzheimer's. But running Rosetta@home just might! https://boinc.bakerlab.org/rosetta/ |

Ya I would expect it just depends upon % of time for what ELSE your PC is doing. Yes I mean 90%, let's say, for BOINC and 10% for other stuff, that's 54 minutes of BOINC CPU time. |

You should get hold of Process Explorer by sysinternals (now owned by Microsoft) http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/ProcessExplorer.html It gives you much more detail about what is going on, what is very useful is the individual process time graphs. Team mauisun.org |

You should get hold of Process Explorer by sysinternals (now owned by Microsoft) I would also recommend TCPView and pagedfrg by the same folks. TCPView will show which processes have TCP/UDP ports open. (I like to watch this as BOINC uploads and downloads workunits.) It should also give you some indication if your machine has been compromised and is being used to connect to foreign hosts. Pagedfrg will degragment some critical system files. The pagedfrg will only work before those system files get opened (i.e. before you fully boot). You can set it up to defragment those files once, or every time you reboot your machine. |

If there is too little RAM in a system, CPU time can end up being much less than real time because the system spends a lot of time swapping to hard disk. |
