I have been running a laptop for Rosetta with Windows 2000. I just updated to Windows XP and I expected that my computers list would have this as a new computer entry since something very fundamental had changed.

However, the same computer entry is there but with the OS changed. It has all the old work units done unde 2000 still listed under it.

Is that normal? I thought a new computer entry would be made.

It's the computer with "jim" in the title in my computer list.

If you change OS, CPU, ..... you cannot merge both computers. The config must be exactly the same.

I upgraded to XP from 2000. Instead of creating a new computer in my computer list the 2000 entry was simply replaced with the XP, keeping all of the old stats associated to the 2000 computer.

The CPID (I think) is associated with a specific config, OS, cpu, ... If you change one part of the config it is considered as another computer.

I DID change the OS but it is NOT considered a new computer in my account. That's what is weird, and that's why I'm bringing it up here :)

This happened when I upgraded RAM in another computer. Maybe newer versions of BOINC allow for changes without listing the upgraded computer as a new computer?

i had the same happen when i changed the overlclocking on this machine a couple of times (bios recogniced it as a different cpu) and still have the same host-id i got when i first attached this host, never changed the os though.

We have the higher population/km² in the world. That's not very relaxing.

I have changed OS and processors on several computers and they merge as long as I use the same name for the computers. One odd thing is that it wouldn't merge DELLA1 and della1, yet it merged della1 and della2 once. Look at my computer names. At various times, computer fad has been FAD without a problem.

The computer name can be changed in the System Properties | Computer Name Changes.

If it is considered a different computer can I then merge them? If so how do the stats get worked out. I assume I will get a new computer entry and I won't be able to merge as BOINC will identify the computer as a totally different machine due to the CPU's changing.

Not certain of the answer. I don't think it will be a new "host". But I wanted to point out that you could just try it and see. And if you don't like the result, then back off the change and be back to the host you're happy with.

My x2 3800+ at work was considered a single system (with 2 cores). I'd be surprised if Boinc would want to create a seperate installation ID for two more cores.

To use all 4 cores, in General Preferences, you'll want to change "on multiprocessor systems" to at least 4, though.
