Can lowering the CPU voltage hurt the CPU? Even if it runs stable, is the lifetime not reduced? Overvolting the CPU can make the CPU not operate at the default voltage at default speed anymore, does this also apply to undervolting? Actully modern CPU's do this already, when they drop thier frequency (Hz) they drop thier voltage as well. Even the PIII-m with speedstep did this. AthlonXP-M also do this. Both these are mobile CPU's though but desktops now do it. Athlon64's have Cool'n'Quiet, so when its 'cool & quiet' it sits at 0.8GHz at a low voltage and stops the fan (thats the aim), but when more the 0.8GHz is actully needed [like running Vista at idle ;-) /joke/] it pumps in more voltage, ups the Hz accordingly up to a maximum specified by the CPU. And all the others do similar nowadays. So reducing it does not damage the CPU since it doesn't add strain on the circuit (increased resistance and fields do to the higher voltage). You'll just find that the voltage cannot support the frequency you want and become unstable (i.e. why you increase it on overclocks etc..) Team mauisun.org |

I forgot to thank you Jack for your time and patience so now i will do so, THANKS. Thread Master is not a dud. I have put it to work on my lap top. Arif Ok! dont worry, just know i have uninstalled it. When i install it again then i give it another try. Thanks Life is limited. Death is a surety. |

Has anyone looked at the "All versions" link at the boinc.dowload.php page lately?. It lists the boinc alpha version 5.6.5 which allows users to try out the cpu throttle feature. |

Has anyone looked at the "All versions" link at the boinc.dowload.php page lately?. It lists the boinc alpha version 5.6.5 which allows users to try out the cpu throttle feature. It didn't seem to behave for me. Instead of throttling, it appears to pause and unpause processing at about a one second rate. I was trying to resolve a problem with BOINC not getting out of the way of the new iTunes (7.0) on a 3.0 GHz Hyperthreader WinXP Home. When BOINC is running, iTunes periodically garbles and won't clear up without stopping and restarting iTunes. When BOINC is not running, it never garbles. I "fixed" it by setting that machine in a venue with "On multiprocessors use at most" set to 1. Effectively throttles the CPU to 50% and iTunes works fine. |

It turns processing on X amount/off Y amount/ on X amount......etc. I.E 50% would be ON 1/2 second/ OFF 1/2 second. Atleast, that's how I understand it. |

It didn't seem to behave for me. Instead of throttling, it appears to pause and unpause processing at about a one second rate. It certainly makes sense that it would work that way, but the on/off interval seemed to be long enough that my problem with iTunes had plenty of time to develop during one "on" cycle. |

To be fair the throttle feature was not designed to fix iTunes problems (or similar) but designed for just keeping the CPU cooler for worried people ;-) But that's not what your doing and you found a good fix for yourself :-) and you don't really loose much crunching time and save some memory space. At this time, im doing fine with TreadMaster, because my PC is second hand and the cooling fan doesnt work well. I suppose the bearing has weared off. From my experience, if u make changes to parms of TM, they will take effect the next time u restart BOINC or any app that uses TM. Also when BOINC moves onto the next WU will it read the parm for the particular project. It will not read them when switching projects using the Pre-Emting Keep In Memory of say an hourly project switch, only when starting a new WU. That's how is works on my WXP SP2. cheers Coelum Non Animum Mutant, Qui Trans Mare Currunt |

So, if I restart BOINC, the new values will be accepted? |

If you changed a pref on the website, just go to the "projects tab", click on Rosetta in the right hand box(until it highlights), then click the "update" radio button on the left. |
