Hi

Can anyone tell me which file(s) contain the unique identifier for that computer? If someone (me) were to do something stupid like copy the same boinc folder to two comptuers then what file would need removing/changing so that these computers report as different machines?

(there is/was a good reason, but basically it seemed the easiest way to do it at the time!)

The client/server should recognise that you have copied things over and straighten it out automatically. It may take a couple of connections of both hosts though. Actually it is more common for BOINC to think a new host record is needed when it really isn't than for it not to create one when it is needed.

Thanks for the reply. There won't be any server-side problems will there? After each one contacted the server, it switched from listing one comptuer spec to the other in 'My Computers'. One of them hasn't reported any results yet so when it does, I guess that will be when they are split?

Most likely that is correct, it may take additional connections though. It should not cause any problems serverside.

I guess what you were wanting to do was to avoid having to attach to the projects again?

If so, for future reference, the way to do this is to do a fresh install of boinc, then copy over all the files with names matching account_*.xml

Then when you first run boinc from each of the separate computers, it will know it belongs to the projects and will automatically create new host records.

If you look at these filenames, you can easily spot which one belongs to each project, and select just the ones you want / delete the projects you do not want on that machine.

With the latest client, another approach to the same end is to use an account manager.

thanks for the replies ;)

i wanted to not use the install package as it has failed when installing to a network drive for me before (haven't tried recently).

Just had a thought an Account Manager is not much use to you if they are sneakernetted, due to the fact you have no internet connetion ;-)
Of course BoincView or similar can be used to do large scale alterations across the clients.
BUT there is the Farm Manager functionality that came when Account Manager functionality was added.
So does anyonr know anything about this, is there is a 'Farm Manager' program out there and if it would be useful for dcdc's sneakernetting ?

Just noticed this is not the sneakernetting thread hey, it's along the lines of it :-)

Yes and no.

Not much use to the sneakernet project, true.

Could be useful to other disconnected groups of clients. I am vaguely looking at putting up an account manager site on a webserver internal to our lan, and whether that is worth the effort as BoinView currently does almost everything I want anyway. My provate account manager would be visible even when we do not have an outside net connection, but no good for controlling machines outside our lan.

But this is a very different context to dcdc's sneakernet.

OK, so maybe install onto a HD, do not start BOINC, copy in the account_ files, and then clone that onto the network drives?

as I say, just in case you find yourself needing to do this again.
