No, the linux client is x86 only. Though if there are any PS3 developers that wish to port Rosetta@Home client and give instructions how to keep compiling the client to the developers get in touch with them or the moderators (see the main message board.) You will also need to compile BOINC itself, see the BOINC website for that. Team mauisun.org |

I think there are already PS3/PPC versions of BOINC; PS3Grid is a PS3 only BOINC project, for instance, while SETI is looking to build a PS3 version of its application. I don't think you would need to optimize the actual BOINC app for the SPEs in the Cell; you could just use the PPC core, BOINC doesn't really need heavy duty computation itself. Thus the existence of PS3 versions would be relatively easy, since the PPC was used on Mac for so long (still plenty out there too). Crunching Rosetta as a member of the Whirlpool BOINC Teams |

Has there been any progress on this? I could plunk down $500 for a machine that crunches number 16-19 times faster than my PC. Unfortunately, the only thing I know about Linux is how to read the installation guide. |

No. SETI, PS3Grid and yoyo has a SPE application. SIMAP and Einstein a PPE only application.
No. If you would use the full power of the PS3 (SPE application) you need to rewrite the science application code. |

Has there been any progress on this? I could plunk down $500 for a machine that crunches number 16-19 times faster than my PC. Unfortunately, the only thing I know about Linux is how to read the installation guide. I think you could do better building a PC from scratch. If I am not mistaken the PS3 is not as fast, and also not as nimble/agile for crunching data. The CPU is an in-order processor, which means it can only do one thing at a time. Most, if not all, CPUs are out-of-order processors; which means they can do many things at one time. Also, not to mention the fact the PS3 has only 256 mb of RAM. You can now buy 1 gig of DDR 800 RAM for less then 40 dollars now. But if you wanted to play games just buy a Wii or 360. If you want to have purely a box to crunch data for Rossetta@home and other BOINC clients I'd build a PC. P.S. The reason why the PS3 and 360 are so cheap are due to them having in-order CPUs. Even though on paper the specs seem to be so amazing. In reality they do only one thing well, and that's why people buy so many of them. |

Bought my ps3 specifically for BOINC. I would be willing to farm them if there was another project available. Yoyo doesn't count as it is just a wrapper for distributed.net which already has a native ps3 app that works better anyway. Just wanted to chime in my support as the ps3 has amazing number crunching ability per watt. Sony told me the soonest a ps4 will be available is late 2010 but no guarantees. We all have this incredible machine already why not take advantage of it? Word is Seti will have an official app soon so hopefully this paves the way. However, seti isn't really my thing. (Why search for something that is here, lol) Einstein is supposedly working on an app. If you are unfamiliar with the amazing CELL BE, check this out! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cell_BE Also, check out Terrasoft and YDL6 http://terrasoftsolutions.com/ Peace! -Brandon |
