Can anyone explain the difference between the BOINC Rosetta ver. 4.79 and the BOINC version via the World Community Grid Rosetta ver. 4.19 ???

I just joined the World Community Grid this morning and it's using Rosetta 4.19 in BOINC (Linux Install on a Windows PC).

Totally different applications. World Grid's "Rosetta" is unrelated to this project. And totally unrelated to Apple's "Rosetta" instruction-set translation utility. Just an example of three different things with the same name.

Actually the World Community Grid's Rosetta is related to our Rosetta. This
thread describes gives a bit more detail.

The world community grid's human proteome folding project is very much related to this project. David Baker is also involved in the WCG project, which is using a slimmed down version of Rosetta and applying it to the human genome along with other important genomes like malaria. The scientific lead of the project is Richard Bonneau who was a graduate student in DB's lab and then went on the Institute for Systems Biology (ISB) here in Seattle.

If you go to the official ISB page about the WCG human proteome folding project, you will see David Baker's affiliation at the bottom, including a researcher in DB's lab, Lars Malmstrom, who is helping to set up the database and interface to all the data produced by the WCG project. Eventually we will link the results to our Robetta server so researchers will have direct access to pre-processed protein structure predictions and a lot of extra information provided by the ISB. There is also a lot of nice information about proteins and Rosetta on the ISB page.

The relationship can be looked at this way: they apply Rosetta, we develop, test, and try to make Rosetta better.

In that case can someone tell me why the UD Rosetta, which is being done in conjunction with the WCG Rosetta takes a lot more CPU hours than the parent WGC ones?

WCG got their client from Grid...

Dont confuse the client framework with the applications that run within it.

WCG use the UD client framework for windows and boinc client framework for linux.
One of the applications that currently run within these frameworks is Rosetta, the same Rosetta that this project is trying to improve.

WCG now has a Boinc client for Windows as well.

I went to their site and can't find any links to a BOINC setup, other than it being mentioned for Linux users.

WCG surprised me by bringing out the boinc linux client.
The boinc windows application coming so soon is also a surprise.

Thats presents me a little bit of a dillema.
Do i put all my resources into helping make rosetta better or put resources into a practical application of Rosetta ?
Or a bit of both, but what ratio ?
Now my head hurts :)

Thanks for supplying that link Tony. I should have included it in my earlier post, but I wasn't thinking (I'm still not used to it, makes my head hurt too).

Those were the directions I followed to install it on my pc.

I found it a bit odd at first that I had to install a Linux app on my Whendoes pc, but it's working fine, no smoke yet...

FYI:
You don't have to install anything, you just have to get to the page that provides your account key. Once you have your account key you can attach to the project. I didn't even download the linux app.

Why not do both?

Run both of the BONIC projects, with a resource share that allows you to contribute what you would like to the application of the Rosetta program and also to the development. Though, if I still get the point of Rosetta@Home (discussed elsewhere) there will also be "practical" applications done here.

But, what is more practical than making the application better?
