Should I set the processor affinity to specific cores in my windows process list? I've got two instances of rosetta running in the list - i can assign one to core1, the other to core2... if it will help? |

Should I set the processor affinity to specific cores in my windows process list? I've got two instances of rosetta running in the list - i can assign one to core1, the other to core2... if it will help? I think this is done by the core client already. I got an P4 w/ HT an both threads are using 50% CPU each, so I think the CC is handling this. |

You have to set the Boinc-Preferences to use 1 or 2 processor set it to 1 if you plan to use extensively your box and 2 if you don't mind waiting for other applications to start. I don't think affinity assignment would increase the speed. unless you assign the same affinity to all other program. this would slow only 1 cpu. I for myself think this is useless. Joss |

Make sure you're set to use two processors (as it seems you have), and my biggest tip for you....Turn OFF CNQ cool and quiet will kill your crunching ability. The boinc manager is set to ULTRA low priority, so CNQ thinks there's no need for the extra CPU freq and dials it back by 1/2. |

in theory you will gain a little time when you manually assign the 2 processes each to one cpu, but as you would need to do it with every new wu (every ~2h) i don't think it is worth it (the gain is maximal in the timeframe of minutes). even with the 2 wu's assigned to a specific cpu, you still have context switches in the cpu as there are still other processes running that need cpu time. -- Florian www.domplatz1.de |
