Karl, glad to hear you are venturing out of your comfort zone. You'll find it all very interesting. I found this article in Wired to be written at about the right level to see what the protein quest is all about. I found it from the links on the project's articles page. Caution, those articles are all over the map as far as human readability. If you end up in one that doesn't grab you in the first paragraph... skip it. It was probably written BY a PhD, FOR a PhD.

Hi Scott,

One cobblestone or one credit is the equivalent of:

1 percent of the work done per day by a computer that has a speed of:

1000 double-precision MIPS (Whetstone) and

1000 VAX MIPS (Dhrystone)

MIPS = million instructions per second

"Double-precision" means calculations with a depth of 64 bits (32 bits is "single-precision") which are about 16 decimal digits.

edited for spelling and clarity

Regards,

Christoph

what is a cobblestone?

It's another word for credit.

Look here in the Wiki:
A Cobblestone is 1/100 day of CPU Time on a Reference Computer that does:

1,000 double-precision MIPS based on the Whetstone Benchmark.
1,000 VAX MIPS based on the Dhrystone Benchmark.
The Cobblestone is named after Jeff Cobb of SETI@Home, for what reason I am not sure.

I just crossed the 1,000 posts mark. I've made every effort to make most of them informative, understandable, and helpful to other Rosetta contributors. I hope you have been aided by them and found them useful.

Proudly Banned from Predictator@Home and now Cosmology@home as well. Added SETI to the list today. Temporary ban only - so need to work harder :)

I just passed 200000 points in Rosetta (and a few days ago 500000 points for all projects).
