There are two reasons to do redundent computing. One is to validate the science by checking the answers to see that they are the same. That is the primary reason. The second is to "level" the credit to a reasonable award. In some cases, and Rosetta@Home is one (for the moment) there is no need to double check the returns for the needs of the production of "valid" results. The result of the procesing is enough. If they do redundency they cut their resources by a like amount. So, redundency of 2 cuts the work performed in half with no gain in the validity of what is being done. Credit is a sensitve issue with all of us participants. And RAH is aware of our tenderness ... :) But, to do redundency of 2 or 3 just to try to find inflated claims is against the best interests of all of us. That being said, with SETI@Home on the verge of releasing the new version of the science application that uses FLOP counting we hope to see a much more stable and "fair" system for generating claims. Long term I feel more will need to be done to improve the integrrety of the process, but this is a necessary first step in any case. If the initial indications are good that this does work as we hope, we can hope to see if we can get improved FLOP counting in the Rosetta application itself. At that point we leave the problems of the benchmarks distorting the claims behind. I have, and will discuss this more if you want more philosophy ... :) |

Paul, is seti-enhanced still scheduled for this month (read/was told that somewhere) or is it going to slip so seti can catch up with their jobs (credit transfer, etc.) or it just not ready, if so any eta ? Team mauisun.org |

No ETA, but the final test version went up yesterday sometime. So, barring problems it is close at hand. We could see it as soon as next week. But, with the rabid reactions of some people, I don't blame them for not releasing dates. There was a case where the message said something like "we will be up about 'x'" and minutes past that time there were people maintaining that the estimate was the schedule and that they had been PROMISED! ... Sigh, I sure don't understand people ... |

So Boinc-seti does need redundancy. It also creates the 'close' social atmosphere there. All good. Are there more - one computer per wu - projects out there? It's nice to know that we are 'plowing through' this one. ----------------------- Click to see my tag My tag SNAFU'ed? Turn the Page! :D |

Not sure if 5,000,000 some odd seconds can be considered "plowing through" the work or not ... :) WCG does not show the back end stuff, so I don't know if they use redundent computing or not. Once you get used to the visibility BOINC gives you, you sure do get addicted to it ... :) |

WCG Boinc uses a quorum of 4. |

WCG Boinc uses a quorum of 4. Is there a way to see your actual work? All I have been able to find are the summary pages. Also, do you have the other quorum rule numbers? ==== edit See Quorum Rules. |

I can see the quorum number via clicking through my computers's results to the work unit id page. Plus: Paul, I see you have more Boinc projects than are shown at the main Boinc page: Climateprediction.net: study climate change Einstein@home: search for gravitational signals emitted by pulsars LHC@home: improve the design of the CERN LHC particle accelerator Predictor@home: investigate protein-related diseases Rosetta@home: help researchers develop cures for human diseases SETI@home: Look for radio evidence of extraterrestrial life Cell Computing biomedical research (Japanese; requires nonstandard client software) World Community Grid: advance our knowledge of human disease. (Requires 5.2.1 or greater) Where did you find them? And: I tried to figure out how to connect Boinc to WCG. Man! they are confusing, I gave up! :( ----------------------- Click to see my tag My tag SNAFU'ed? Turn the Page! :D |

So Boinc-seti does need redundancy. It also creates the 'close' social atmosphere there. hahahahahahahaha ... You've got to be kidding me. The Seti Forums is the most Dog eat Dog of any of the Projects. There's constant friction between 1 group of the Project against the other. There's also a constant lambasting of the Developers by many of the Forum Members although they have their defenders too. I quit running the Seti Project many months ago because of the Three Ring Circus Atmosphere over there & probably will never run it again. If thats what you call a Close Social Atmosphere you can have it ... ;) |

lol! I DID say close, not friendly. One thing I like about Americans over Canadians is that they deal with issues. May be completely odd and roundabout way at times, but they do deal with stuff. Learning to read through the personally-not-liked garb and seeing if anything is actually asked or stated that can help was a big learning step for me. But that's just me. Atleast you're still crunching!!! :) ----------------------- Click to see my tag My tag SNAFU'ed? Turn the Page! :D |

Rumors ... :) Mostly I scan the boards, read news and when there is a hint, I google and then when I can find the site add them to the appropriate place. As you see in the Wiki we separate the Production projects from the non-standards and from the test projects. I do NOT recommend attaching to test projects. Also on the project list page there is a link at the bottom that takes you to one of the sites that collects projects and describes them a little bit. Lastly, people e-maill me when they stumble on a site. Mostly we list them as a courtesy for those that want to sign up early (I do a lot so I can patrol message boards) and so I can keep tabs on them as they move through the testing process. Some don't seem to progress much ("The Lattice Project") and others seem to die ("Xtremlab", Crash Collection, etc.) For WCG, Click on the link to download the linux client, regardless of doing windows or linux. That takes you to account creation. Create an account. they e-mail account key, attach as normal for windows and linux. Nothing for OS-X yet. |

Thanks, But I'll wait till this part of the agreement is dealt with: IT IS ANTICIPATED THAT EVENTUALLY IBM WILL TRANSFER WORLD COMMUNITY GRID TO A NON-IBM OWNED NOT-FOR-PROFIT ENTITY. Or when I get a job again myself. ;) ----------------------- Click to see my tag My tag SNAFU'ed? Turn the Page! :D |

Click on the Linux install, then it's one of the boxes you're supposed to check AFTER reading agreement. lol ----------------------- Click to see my tag My tag SNAFU'ed? Turn the Page! :D |

Although, Boinc does seem to come across as a non-profit thing, to me. oh well. Cheers to the 'fine print'???? ----------------------- Click to see my tag My tag SNAFU'ed? Turn the Page! :D |

BOINC is, and so are all of the projects that I know of except one, for which there is little information, but there are hints that it is a "for profit" project. At this time we don't have it in the Wiki even because of this; but the project seems to be non-responsive so, it may be a zero threat. |

WCG is run (afaik) as a not for profit project and certainly all project submitted to it must release all the results gathered in a public domain manner for anyone to use (not sure if the project group has to be a not-for-profit) I think you're miss-reading that statement. It is currently run and funded by IBM and they are certainly not a not-for-profit company, does no mean it is not run as not-for-profit. But in future when it establishes it self and settles down, it will spin it of under is own name (rather than I guess a department) mecano, www.boincstats.com has a good list of projects Paul, An ETA of sometime soon-ish is a good enough answer for me, soon-ish being 'hopefully' ;-) Team mauisun.org |
