Paul,
An ETA of sometime soon-ish is a good enough answer for me, soon-ish being 'hopefully' ;-)

Fluffy,

Um, what was the question I answered? You have lost me ...

"When will SETI_Enhanced be released?"... :-)

(Yes, I had to look back through a lot of posts to figure that out!)

thanks for this fluffy.

I don't think I misunderstood what they said about the non profit stuff. If there is something amiss, it might be how they come across.
They difinetely want us to read it first, and I did, and that's how it sounds... for profit right now.

"World Community Grid is making technology available only to public and not-for-profit organizations to use in humanitarian research that might otherwise not be completed due to the high cost of the computer infrastructure required in the absence of a public grid. As part of our commitment to advancing human welfare, all results will be in the public domain and made public to the global research community." Source: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/about_us/viewAboutUs.do

So, non-profit for now, perhaps for-profit in the future. At least that is my take on it. Even though I get no other benefit from it I am pretty firm in my belief that my support will be mostly for not-for-profit university research. I can see me supporting for-profit if the reward for me is there ... but, I do not see how that might work out. If, say, the payment would be enough to pay my electric bill, then I would be inclined to provide resources. But, if it is just pennies a day, why bother? I am spending dollars a day for electricity to feed my habit ...

Anyway, with BOINC, if they do go for-profit I can drop them like a brick and go to the next not-for-profit ... not trying to "push" anyone here. :)

Just trying to make sure we have out ducks in a row when we DO make these decisions. And, if I am wrong, someone can correct me ... :)

I'll keep an eye on the wiki frontpage for profit vs. non-profit projects. ;)

Well, the for-profit will disappear from the main lists and we will make a new one. Somewhat like the one we have for the ones that need non-standard versions of the BOINC Client Software.

Ok. Here's a kicker that gets me baffled. Here's the factors:
IBM
Money
Power
Technology
Resources
Knowledge

All that and they're still running an out of date version of Rosetta? WCG is running Rosetta 4.22 while my main Rosetta is running 4.81. Am I missing something here or is IBM actually behind the times in something? Makes no sense to me.

WCG Boinc uses a quorum of 4.

Is there a way to see your actual work? All I have been able to find are the summary pages.

Also, do you have the other quorum rule numbers?

==== edit

See Quorum Rules.

Paul not sure if you have been answered on this one. They have the 'task' of implementing the 'normal' boinc 'results' page (and also Teams) but it is a low priority behind getting the HIV off the ground. The Windows version of Boinc WCG was just good happenstance and they will fill in the gaps later.

All this was from various posts on their forum.

Well, since this is where Rosetta (the program) is developed, it is natural we will have a higher version number. WIthout knowing more it is hard to say, but, it is also certainly possible that all the versions inbetween had problems of one kind or another. And we are not sure about 4.81 as we are still seeing 1% "hangs" ...

Fundamentally I can see at least two reasons not to upgrade to the "latest"

1) The research requires a stable baseline so all the outputs are compatible
2) There is no compelling feature in the newer version to force an update.

Since we are testing not only newer versions, we are also testing changes to search strategies. When Rosetta@Home starts to run actual research data through it is very likely that you will be running various versions of the Rosetta program. The development program is running 5.6x; the malaria program 4.83, the cancer 4.97, the aids 5.32 and so on ...

The point being, you can not always separate the program from the data. At times the data has to be run through the same version of the program or the results are not useful.

Hope this helps ...

Oh, and never buy an Microsoft Operating system until SP1 is out ...

So what happens if the result is successful this time? :)

Max success results 10 is meaningless in the context of Rosetta@Home though I might add ... as we do not form quorums with more than 1 member.

If it is succesful I guess it will stop sending out any more.
If it is not, it should also stop.
They probably are leaving in the max 10 good either as a backup, or cause it's a parameter the program needs filled to be able to run. (have done some program, long ago.)

Addit:
and after reading this page:
https://boinc.bakerlab.org/rosetta/rah_graphics.php
I see they like to attack a problem like I do.

And, although They say:
Rosetta is to predict the shapes that proteins fold up into in nature.
and:
Rosetta keeps track of the lowest energy shape found in each trajectory.

I will assume the latter is what they are looking for. Lowest energy shape being what is found in nature.

Since we stop when we find a success result this COULD be 1, in one sense it is more correct to be 1. The point is to prevent the system from sending out the results for this work unit if after, in this case, there were 10 success results and yet a quorum could not be formed.

Or to put it another way, the model is unstable enough that after 10 tries we are not getting close correspondence betwenn returns.

Then I'd have to guess that 10 is the default, and rather than editing them all, and with the quorum set at 1, it may be a time saver.

addit:
if they wanted 2 copys out and only 1 correct to stop sending out more, then I'd say they'd have to change the 10 to 1, then.
