I have the same problem. When the screen saver has b een running for a while it locks up and I have to reboot the PC Basically it was happening each morning - so I dont know how long it takes for the problem to happen. The machine with this problem is running windows XP Professional Version 5.1 SP 2 (Build 2600.xpsp+sp2_gdr.050301-1519) Ive turned off the screen saver and it doesnt hang any more. Problem is - the screen saver is a gr8 way to get people interested in Boinc (and rosetta) so I would to use it at some point. My PC is an Dual Core AMD 4600+ with 1 GB RAM with a RADEON XT 800 Graphics card. If u need any more information let me know |

I have the problem at home AND at work. Both running Win XP, but different platforms. There does not seem to be too much on this forum regarding this problem, but I see that it is a common complaint out there in the larger world - many posts are to be seen on many Win forums. I have uninstalled Rosetta for the time being. If someone at Rosetta solves this will you please let me know. |

Hi all, this is not a Rosetta specific problem, but a BOINC one. The screensaver gives problems on quite a few machines with ATI graphics cards, regardless of OS. In some cases problems seem to be resolved when not using the catalyst control center (i.e. uninstalling it, it does not give you anything but memory consumption anyway, at least according to my experience) or when using the latest drivers. Another way to resolve it is to not run the BOINC screensaver (which is of course conterproductive if you definitely want to watch it) but just let the screen go blank (which I do with my Radeon 9250, especially as the screensaver consumes a lot of CPU time). BOINC is working on that problem for quite a while now (especially Rom Walton seems to be on that), but I haven't seen a definite cure for it. Must be some critical incompatibility with ATI they couldn't fully track down yet. Sorry that that is all I can tell you at this time. Regards, Christoph |

Yes - I said "Rosetta" in my previous post when I should have said "BOINC". My display adapter at work is a "VIA/S3G UniChrome IGP", so if the problem is graphics related there is more to the equation than ATI. My PC at home DOES have an ATI 9000 card, so that could be a factor there. Is there an option in BOINC which allows you to run the task without the graphics? |

I'm using the very latest build on my Windows XP professional work-station. Alas I am not using an ATI card but, an intel 845e chipset and as far as I can tell this lockup hasn't happened with the SETI@home BOINC plugin. That may be totally anecdotal though ! Best Regards, Bryan |

BOINC uses OpenGL so if it is a screensaver most likely it in the OpenGL driver. My first sugestion to anyone would be to get the latest motherboard and graphics card drivers. See if that helps. Make sure you don't turn on any Antialiasing etc.. just let the program decide for itself. (forcing some of these was he only time I had graphics crash on my laptop with a ATI Radeon card. Though i've not tested it recently... Team mauisun.org |
