I've checked the faq's and I can't find the answer to my question so here goes:

Can the Boinc manager connect to the internet if I'm not already connected?

I have a weird type of DSL that uses a modem-like connectoid (dumb-dumb-dumb DUN). It disconnects itself if my computer is idle or if I've been online for two hours. I'd like the Boinc manager to be able to "dial" in whenever it needs to, but I'm not sure how to get it to do so.

Any ideas?

Hi Debbie,

I have a DSL modem too and the BOINC manager can connect to the internet just the way any other application does, e.g. like a browser. It requests the connection and the modem goes online.

So if all you need to do to open a connection to the web is clicking on your browser (and no other message pops up that asks you if the connection shall be established) then I'd say BOINC can do so too on your PC. The only thing that may happen is that your firewall pops up a message that requests you to confirm that BOINC is allowed to do so at the very first start (or after updates of the BOINC software of course, as version changes need to be confirmed for the firewall too).

Regards,

Christoph

And so there are two relevant settings in your General Preferences. They are labeled:
1) "Confirm before connecting to Internet?" and
2) "Disconnect when done?"

and so you'd want #1 to be NO, because you want it to do so without prompting you. And #2 probably doesn't really matter, but if nothing else on your computer would be using the connection, then I'd say let's be a good DSL citizen and say YES.

Thanks for the responses. Between the two of them, I figured out that I only had to change my DUN settings to "connect automatically". I had already set BOINC to go online as needed without confirmation and it wasn't doing it - but now it is!
