He'p me! Rosetta seems to hang up my system almost every time it runs. Einstein and SETI are running flawlessly, but nearly every time Rosetta comes up the screen saver hangs and I have to <Ctrl-Alt-Del> to get out of it again. While this is happening, my CPU fan sounds like a bagpipe inflating. I hope we can find a fix. Rosetta seems worthwhile, but I'll have to detach if this keeps up... Thanks, Raoul |

Raoul, welcome to Rosetta! Not exactly sure what bagpipes inflating sounds like, but I take it that your fan is rather busy! Rosetta is actually more computationally intensive then many of the other projects. It does a lot more floating point math. If your fan is running fast, that would tend to indicate Rosetta is crunching away. There have been some recent problems with the screen saver. They are working to track them down. In the meantime, it is suggested to set screensaver to none. This helps BOINC devote more time to crunching for your projects anyway. You can still view the graphic while Rosetta is running. Just select the running task and then click the "show graphics" button. Keep an eye on this thread for resolution to the screensaver problems. Add this signature to your EMail: Running Microsoft's "System Idle Process" will never help cure cancer, AIDS nor Alzheimer's. But running Rosetta@home just might! https://boinc.bakerlab.org/rosetta/ |

Thanks for the fast response! Since installing BOINC (a move I'm not entirely sure I'm happy about) I've become rather nervously accustomed to some whining from my CPU fan. However, it's WHEN ROSETTA HANGS that the noise goes from frightening to terrifying. When I kill the program from the Task Manager, there's a big decrease in noise level. I've had a few instances where I've found another BOINC project showing on my screen saver (frozen), but only terminating Rosetta from my Task Manager will free up my system. My PC is pretty new and fairly large in capacity. I don't think I have any serious capacity constraints...at least not from a hardware standpoint. I hope the screen saver is fixed soon. It's fine and all to have BOINC running in the background all the time, but I want the screen saver. I suspect a lot of people do. It's our immediate payoff for hosting you guys' computations. My immediate impulse is to detach from Rosetta until it's ready for prime time. Thanks, Raoul |

Hello, part of Rosetta@Home is the improvement of the client so there will always be some hangs or problems along the way. It is not like Seti or Einstein where the client is made and then stays around for a long time, the feedback they get goes directly back into imporving the methods hence the code. They also alter various part to improve the user experience (like the graphics) Unfortunatly the graphics seems to be what is casuign the problem at the moment. It was all fine and dandy untill they added the docking part onto Rosetta and the aditional graphics they wanted to show. The fan spinnig at high speed is just the computer protecting itself when it gets hot. When it hangs it probably causes the compuiter to go 'oh bugger better just make sure'. At least you get to know when it hangs ;-) In the mean time just don't use the screensaver or look at the graphics :-( come and have a chat in the main message board and you get a feel of what it is all about :-) Thanks for the fast response!
