Hi! Will there ever be a distributed computing project to find new medicines against Asthma? How good are the newest Asthma medicines? How much better than the medicines in the late 1980s? |

We did some Asthma (as part of Respiritory Diseases) at Find-a-Drug. So there has been projects. Team mauisun.org |

Thanks! Good to know that. I wonder, what did they do with the results. Maybe they will one day continue Find-a-Drug as a BOINC-project?? |

Doubt they would restart it as a boinc project as well we pretty much docked everything. They created a hugh list of inhibitors for various things and I guess it's down to the slow stage now... Some University (I forget which) will be using the Asthma results. I've not checked on any of that info for a long time now. Once of the reasons for not using BOINC is they had their own DC setup (and in some aspects still a better setup than BOINC) client and they could customise it how they liked. BOINC just gives nothing extra but a lot of restrictions. Team mauisun.org |

P.S. There is nothing to stop Rosetta from Docking though with their type of Docking..... Keith is still in the Virtual Screening buisiness though and will be presenting at Virtual Discovery 2007 maybe that's something Rosetta@Home could get someone out to, spread the word around there as well. Be a nice trip to London Team mauisun.org |

Keith is still in the Virtual Screening buisiness though and will be presenting at..etc That's great to know, thanks for that information. I didn't know he was still in the business, and it's good to know that the work we did there may still come to some use (or already has, maybe). It would be great to hear any other feedback about the outcomes from FaD. Alver Valley Software Ltd - Contributing ALL our spare computing power to BOINC, 24x365. |

Keith is still in the Virtual Screening buisiness though and will be presenting at..etc No idea on the out comes but he's currently presenting in meeting liek the on e above around the UK. No personal contact with him, I just happened to notice. I think he's doing talks on ways to eliminate False Positives and why there are more and better things to look at than thoose wiggly sidechains. Team mauisun.org |

Please, can you tell me more about the restrictions of BOINC? |

Well in general you are limited to what D. Anderson and the main developers want (we'll they have to prioritise somewhere). But some of the biggest restrictions are - no-auto updating of the main client (i.e. boinc.. not it can actually do this, it's just not fully developed yet and it's only a recent thing) - no centralised 'master' client. ... in other words... One computer was set up as the main server, this had the main communication program and GUI (think of it as boinc.exe and boincmanager), it did all the program organising and communication and setting with the server. from this the the clients (think rosetta app) would startup. Either local or over the network and communicate with this central location. If the client had been running over a network (rather than a semi-local setup) the job was not wasted but the partial job was started on the next available computer. - Purging of jobs no longer needed... again boinc can now do this but again not often used at the moment. But it's the ability to tweak it as it went along as needed and add new feature, while this can be don in boinc, it then requires either the boinc devs to add it and hope everyone started using that new very (since no auto update you cannot guarentee that) or add it yourself. This 'add it yourself' then causes boinc not to be the default client, so negating the fact of boinc major benefit, that of the publicity from the userbase and the possibility of getting some of that userbase and requiring all your participant to have to have that different client. I think the centralised master client was of the most benefit to many users though along with the auto-updating everything (if you wanted). Also all setting where local none of this web based mess boinc has though boinc does now have local settings. That's only from the users side of things. Of course the downside is actually having to constantly develop the client and server code along with doing the actual science client and anaysing it and marketing and... lol. So Boinc saves people time and effort there if you can live with the restrictions it brings. Team mauisun.org |
