We SHUOULD GET $$ if corporation "A" is working on something and will PATENT the findings!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Because our money in electric and compute costs went to solve their problem. Any said findings should be mandated to be Public domain. I do NOT want my donations and expense in time/electric/computer use to go to Corp "A" to not cure me, but 'manage' my disease so they can charge me $300/pill for the rest of my life!

If a BIONIC project is private with private computers that is separate issue.

BOINC is a seperate entity. Rosetta@home is not for profit, as stated on the project homepage. The primary goals of Rosetta@home are to create the tools needed for others to discover and develop treatments and vaccines.

volunteer computing is just that, "volunteer".

if you are overly concerned about "my donations and expense in time/electric/computer use", then it is incumbent upon you to read through a project's website, and learn about it.

you might want to consider if the project is affiliated with a college or university, whether it is for-profit or not-for-profit, and if any of the project's results have been used in articles in peer-reviewed journals, etc.

if the project didn't patent their findings and made them public domain then it's unlikely that any pharma companies would invest in the R&D required to take a drug to market because they wouldn't have any protection on their return... They will almost certainly patent it so as to retain control and they can then licence it out under the best terms to allow investment (and possibly get some cash back to improve their research setup...)

I think that generic companies would be quite happy to sell un-patented cures if some where found, but there might also be a way to make one discovery public domain while a certain medication uses that discovery along with other protected processes to work.

Either way, the world is a better place with more known cures than without.

it's the work they'd have to put in before it were sellable - all the research and testing and applications to various medical boards around the world for certification - they wouldn't do that without some form of guarantee for their return.
