A video related to research on BMAA and its possible relation to Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and ALS: Secrets to Alzheimer's, ALS and Parkinson's Disease: Dr. Paul Alan Cox at TEDxJacksonHole http://tedxtalks.ted.com/video/Secrets-to-Alzheimers-ALS-and-P Says that a dietary supplement called l-serine MIGHT be a suitable treatment for at least one of these. They are testing whether it is; not enough results yet to tell. A web site that MAY offer a more detailed and more technical video (in English) on this: http://www.ur.se/Produkter/170138-UR-Samtiden-Miljo-och-framtidstro-Klimatet-och-halsan The instructions are in Swedish, though, so it's hard to tell if you can't read Swedish. |

A web site mentioning something that helps control the excess iron in the brain that occurs during Parkinson's disease: 2009-08-parkinson-disease-iron It's an iron-binding protein, so adding iron to the metal ions your software can link to proteins might help investigate Parkinson's disease also. |

Most of the site is accessible only from within Sweden. However, I was able to access enough to use Google Translate to get this summary: Paul Alan Cox, professor and director of the Institute for ethnomedicine in Wyoming, USA, shows one of the winners of the Earth's climate is getting warmer, namely the cyanobacteria. They like the heat, increasing in number and produce a neurotoxin called BMAA. This toxin is now suspected in turn cause including ALS and Alzheimer's disease in humans. Preferring Gets Title: Climate change, biodiversity and human health. Moderator: Henrik Ekman. Organizers: King Carl XVI Gustaf's 50th årsfond for Science, Technology and Environment, Royal. Agriculture and Forestry Academy, Royal Academy. Sciences, Engineering Sciences and the Confederation of Swedish Enterprise. From the arrangement Faith in the Future held in the Bernadotte Library at the Royal Palace March 22, 2012. Alzheimer's researchers find molecule that delays onset of disease Guardian.article Could the Rosetta@Home researchers interested in Alzheimer's check whether the 3D structure of the Brichos molecule is ready to use, and if not, add it to the list of molecules for structure investigation? |

The recent research on BMAA gave conflicting evidence on whether BMAA is involved in these neurological conditions or not. Could this mean that they are actually caused by something so similar to BMAA than some of the methods use to measure BMAA can tell the two apart, and some of the other methods cannot? beta-Methylamino-L-alanine https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beta-Methylamino-L-alanine beta-N-Methylamino-L-alanine (compound) https://pubchem.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/compound/beta-N-Methylamino-L-alanine#section=Related-Records β-methylamino-L-alanine (BMAA) is not found in the brains of patients with confirmed Alzheimer’s disease https://www.nature.com/articles/srep36363 Are Toxins in Seafood Causing ALS, Alzheimer's, and Parkinson's? https://www.discovermagazine.com/mind/are-toxins-in-seafood-causing-als-alzheimers-and-parkinsons β-Methylamino-L-alanine substitution of serine in SOD1 suggests a direct role in ALS etiology https://journals.plos.org/ploscompbiol/article?id=10.1371/journal.pcbi.1007225 Human Scalp Hair as an Indicator of Exposure to the Environmental Toxin β-N-Methylamino-l-alanine https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5793101/ β-N-Methylamino-l-alanine (BMAA) Toxicity Is Gender and Exposure-Age Dependent in Rats https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5793103/ Lack of behavioral and neuropathological effects of dietary beta-methylamino-L-alanine (BMAA) in mice. https://europepmc.org/article/med/16808967 Acute β-N-Methylamino-L-alanine Toxicity in a Mouse Model https://www.hindawi.com/journals/jt/2015/739746/ The environmental neurotoxin β-N-methylamino-l-alanine (l-BMAA) is deposited into birds' eggs https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S014765131730605X Researchers conduct metabolite analysis of ALS patient blood plasma https://www.eurekalert.org/pub_releases/2020-05/ncsu-rcm052920.php Metabolite Analysis of ALS Patient Blood Plasma Could Reveal, Rule Out, Possible Biomarkers for Disease https://news.ncsu.edu/2020/05/als-plasma-biomarker/ Occurrence of β-N-methylamino-l-alanine (BMAA) and Isomers in Aquatic Environments and Aquatic Food Sources for Humans https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5848184/ Blue-green algae linked to ALS in UM study, but researchers also found promising treatment https://www.miamiherald.com/news/health-care/article240701886.html |
